The filter consists of several components.

  • Postfix, the secure email transport daemon, is responsible for sending/receiving email.  It listens on tcp/25 and tcp/10025.  Email from the internet is accepted on port 25; Postfix then connects to tcp/10024@localhost and sends the email
  • Amavisd, a high-performance mail scanner listens on tcp/10024, accepts the email
  • Amavisd calls ClamAV to run a virus scan on the email, then calls SpamAssassin to generate a spam report for the email
  • If the email is not deposited in quarantine (i.e. if the email is SAFE or a status of PASS), it is sent to tcp/10025@localhost
  • Postfix, listening on tcp/10025, accepts the email and forwards it to the exchange server
  • Users can interact with the spam filter via MAIA Mailguard, which is a website running on Apache on the Linux SpamFilter
